Feature Friday | Shawnigan Lake Museum

This week's Feature Friday is the beloved Shawnigan Lake Museum. Lori Treloar is the Curator and Manager. As a lifelong educator, Lori is delighted to put her skills, creativity and love for history to work at the Shawnigan Lake Museum.

The Shawnigan Lake Historical Society is a not-for-profit, charitable organization established in 1977, by volunteers, to protect and promote the history of Shawnigan Lake and surrounding area. When the new Shawnigan Firehall was built, the society opened the Shawnigan Lake Museum (1983) in the old Firehall, which makes it one of the longest continuously operating entities in the Village.

In addition to being an educational resource centre, the museum is an attraction that draws people to the area: Heritage and tourism go hand in hand. Research shows that Heritage Tourism is an integral part of successful tourism and therefore contributes greatly to the economic benefits of an area. The Shawnigan Lake Museum is at the gateway to the Cowichan Valley and attracts people from far and wide. Our visitor book indicates that, at this point, 29% of our visitors are from the Shawnigan area; 40% are from the Cowichan Valley and the rest of Vancouver Island; 17% from other parts of Canada and 13% from around the world. In addition, our website stats indicate that we are getting hits from all over the world.

Our main purpose is to excite residents and visitors with the wonderful story of Shawnigan Lake, and area. To that end, we offer school programming, engage residents and visitors with events and speakers, stock a gift shop with Shawnigan related items and offer volunteer and summer student opportunities.

Feature Friday | Jillian Lawrence Virtual Assistant

Happy Friday everyone! We're so excited to start our new Feature Friday on our website. Every Friday, we'll be featuring one of Shawnigan Lake's finest business owners and their business. This week, we would like to introduce you to Jillian Lawrence, Virtual Assistant. Be sure to read the entire article to see the amazing deal Jillian is offering fellow SLBA members. Thanks Jillian!

Describe what your business is all about.

I am a virtual assistant, who specializes in social media management for small businesses. In today's cyber focused world, having a regular presence on sites such as Facebook and Twitter are vital for the success of any business. Consumers want to feel a connection with the people they are purchasing from; with social media your customers can have regular in-your-face contact directly to their homepage(s). Social media posts are short information clips that are meant to drive people to your website, where they will find the bulk of information about your business. Allow me to take on the time commitment of managing your social media, so you can focus on building your business.

Where is your business location and what are your hours of operation?

I operate online! I'm happy to meet with local clients to set up a business plan. Otherwise, I'm available via FaceTime and Skype.

How long have you been in business?

My business is new this year and growing rapidly.

What is your background? Education? Work Experience?

I am a marketing geek with mad social media skills. The first 10 years of my career history were spent in the customer service industry where I climbed the corporate ladder. Lucky for me, I discovered my passion for business administration and moved on to work in office settings, excelling into executive assistant positions. My most recent employment, in marketing, offered me experience to broaden my skillset and eventually start working for myself!

Do you have any special offers or discounts for your fellow SLBA members?

If your business is lacking a presence on social media, I am here to help! Facebook is great place to start, and as a member of the SLBA I will create a jazzy business page for you for FREE! No strings attached. If you need helping managing it from there, I'd be happy to talk pricing. Why do you need a Facebook page? Well for starters, it's FREE advertising! Your page will build "followers" who will regularly see your posts, your followers have the ability to "share" those posts to their friends and family, gaining you free advertising. Facebook also allows you to pay a small fee to boost your posts to a target audience.

Shawnigan Gathering 2015

The third annual Shawnigan Gathering takes place Friday, March 13th and Saturday, March 14th. This is a free, family-oriented event. On Friday evening, join us between 6:30 and 9:30 for wonderful local music, including the Twisted Vine Farm Band. Bonterra Pizza will be available for sale by the slice.

On Saturday, there will be presentations, music, and dancing throughout the day, as well as a Community Trade Fair, with over 35 local businesses and organizations represented. Opening ceremonies are at 10:00 am, with free coffee and muffins available. At 11:00, Co-Design from Vancouver will lead us through an interactive design workshop to re-launch our community vision for the Elsie Miles Park. Co-Design has a very interactive and youth-friendly approach to engaging people in the design of their community spaces - they are the driving force behind the designs of Granville Island, Robson Square, and the Woodwards Building in Vancouver.

At 12:30, Rick Juliusson will present about the great success of the HUB community centre, and tell us about the new Cowichan Food Co-op (the Cow-Op). At 1:00 pm, Sandra Mark and Cavan Gates from Christina Lake will present on the success of the Christina Lake Cooperative Investment Fund. At 2:30, Trina Burns will explain how businesses are working cooperatively in Shawnigan, and tell the story of "The Hive." Rob Douglas will give a presentation at 3:15 on the Cowichan Elder Cooperative. Finally, at 3:45, there will be a very exciting Shawnigan announcement.

Between presentations there will be musicians and dancers to entertain the audience. There will be food vendors on site, as well as arts and crafts activities, and free child-minding throughout the day. Join us for a wonderful weekend of community-building.

The mission of the Shawnigan Lake Business Association is to increase the profile of Shawnigan Lake businesses and to support the community.
